Registration FAQ's

bullet

What is a “Parent Cooperative Preschool”?

We are a program with parent participation.  Parents work with the teacher to create a high adult-child ratio and provide a great learning environment for each child.

bullet

What is the philosophy of the school and who designs the curriculum?

Redmond Co-op is a developmentally appropriate, play based preschool.  This means that we believe kids of this age learn best by hands on experiencing their world not by forced memorization and seatwork.  We provide a wide range of activities that are developmentally correct for these ages (art projects, science experiments, gross motor and small motor toys and activities).  Our teachers derive the entire curriculum used during circle time and keep in mind the developmental needs and abilities of the children they are teaching.

bullet

What ages do we serve?

We enroll children ages 3 and 4.

bullet

Do you have a cut-off enrollment age?

Yes, children must be age 3 or 4 as of August 31st of the enrollment year.

We meet in the lower level of the Redmond United Methodist Church on the corner of 166th Ave and 80th St .  We are not affiliated with the church; we rent the facility from the church.

What are Parent Education Classes?

There are nine Parent Education Classes held each school year. Parent classes are held once a month.  These classes include discussion of the developmental stages of preschoolers, and they often provide an opportunity to brainstorm solutions for current parenting issues.  These classes also serve as a time when your whole class can make decision and prepare for the upcoming month.  Each year there are three all-school parent meetings.  An outside parent education expert is usually brought in to speak at these meetings.

bullet

What do you mean by classroom help?

Once a week you will “work” at the school.  Every two weeks you are assigned a “room” which include the story room, the playroom, the kitchen, the art room, the woodworking area, and the block room.  During free time, you play and assist the children in your area.  During music and gathering time, you participate with the children and the teacher.  Every two weeks you rotate so that you serve in all the areas of the preschool.

bullet

What are the committees?

Each student serves on one standing committee. Each committee is important to the operation and the success of the preschool.  The committees are assembled at registration and apportioned to best meet the needs of the preschool.  Consequently, if you change classes after registration you may be required to change committees.  Some committees have regularly scheduled responsibilities, while others operate on a periodic basis.

The committees include:

·        Book Club

·        Maintenance/Facility

·        Safety

·        Parent Education

·        Pet and Plant

·        Ways and Means

·        Special Events

·        Cut and Snip

·        Play dough/Woodworking/Bulletin Board

What do you mean by weekend cleaning and semi-deep cleaning?

We have 10 classes of preschoolers going through our preschool each week.  There is a lot of dirt and grime that needs to be regularly cleaned.  Each parent is responsible for one weekend a year.  Weekend cleans are usually done with another parent.  A rotating cleaning list is provided.  A typical weekend clean will take about 3 hours.

In addition to the weekend cleaning, each class will be required to do a semi-annual deep cleaning of the school.  A typical deep clean will take 2-3 hours.

bullet

Can I observe a class?

Observations are welcome but need to be scheduled.  Please call our registrar to schedule and appointment.  (We would not want you to come when we are going on a field trip of have some other sort of change in schedule.)  We encourage observations during the free-play part of the day.  You may come anytime between 9 - 10AM and 12 -1PM .  You may stay any or all of that time and your preschooler is welcome to come with you.
